Venera Fazio

Lasciar andare

sogno di mia madre

guarita da grave malattia

gioiosa e spensierata

dal passo deciso

mentre vaga per luoghi familiari

assolate colline di Sicilia

e per riprender fiato, ombre fronzute sul pendìo di Dundas

dove i nostri passi s’incrociano

un sorriso enigmatico

nasconde segreti d’eternità

mi rivela di lasciarla andare

Riti

gite in autobus del sabato mattina

il naso schiacciato contro il finestrino

ad assorbire il panorama

case di rossi mattoni , prati ben tenuti,  pendìo scalpellato del Niagara

tra Dundas e  Hamilton

mamma sedeva assorta

ma radiosa nell’ aspettativa

di guidarmi di negozio in negozio

su e giù per corridoi

accarezzando tesori costosi

all’ora del ritorno

ricordava il perché del nostro viaggio

malgrado le mie lacrime

mi metteva addosso

vestiti troppo grandi dai colori sgargianti

cinquant’anni dopo

lo stesso cieco rito in preda al panico

vestiti restituiti

troppo grandi/ del colore sbagliato

Tributo

Rose cremisi nel mio giardino

pianto ricordi di mio padre

affamato immigrante siciliano

nutriva il corpo

dimenticando l’anima

fino a che mise boccioli color sangue

sulla bara di suo figlio.

Sulla tomba ogni settimana

curava cespugli di dolore.

Goccia a goccia

da ferite inferte dalle spine

la sua anima filtrava nel terreno in attesa.

Letting Go

I dream of my mother

cured of terminal illness

joyful and carefree

purposeful in stride

roaming familiar landscapes

sun-drenched hills of Sicily

and for respite, leafy shades of Dundas escarpment

where our paths cross

an enigmatic smile

conceals secret of eternity

but reveals I am to let her go

published, Philadelphia Poets Fall  2006

Ritual

those Saturday morning bus trips

my nose flat against window

absorbing passing vista

red brick houses, tidy lawns, chiseled  Niagara escarpment

between village of Dundas and city of Hamilton

mom sat eyes turned inward

but glowed with anticipation

as she led from store to store

up and down aisles

caressing costly treasures

when it was time to go home

she remembered our purpose

despite my tears

pressed upon me

clothing of garish colours and several sizes too big

fifty years later

same blind panicky ritual

garments returned

too large/wrong colour

Published Feile-Festa, Spring 2007

Tribute

Crimson roses in my garden

I plant memories of my father

famished Sicilian immigrant

nourished the body

while neglecting the spirit

until he placed bleeding blossoms

on the casket of his son.

Each week at the grave

he tended shrubs of grief.

Drop by drop

from thorn-made wounds

his soul seeped into the waiting soil.
